Black enamel draws a sharp outline around each of the five petals, and inside every one sits a clear pear-shaped stone ringed with tiny white stones. A cluster at the centre and a plain polished bail finish it. The black does what kajal does: it makes everything inside look brighter.

Made for the friend whose wardrobe is ninety per cent black and who refuses to apologise for it. She will wear it to the gallery opening, to work on Monday, and to her own birthday party.
